Speed Breakers towards the cloud

We touched upon this topic following my interaction with MSME entrepreneurs in recent times. It is about the adoption of enterprise cloud computing in an MSME setup. It has led their journey from TINA to FOMO to DISAPPOINTMENT.

Why did TINA happen with MSMEs?

In the last three years, there have been massive advertising campaigns in print and digital media by giants of enterprise cloud computing. These campaigns sound like the cloud is the future of IT, and There INAlternative (TINA). Such an eye wash prompted MSMEs to explore the adoption of cloud computing.

How did TINA led to FOMO?

MSMEs have limited knowledge of IT. They don’t have easy access to IT Talent. Enterprise Cloud Computing is complex to understand at the MSME level. A flood of campaigns suggesting There INAlternative to Cloud Computing triggered a sense of FOMO (Fear OMissing Out) among the MSMEs. This sense of FOMO prompted MSMEs to explore Enterprise Cloud Computing options.

Journey – TINA > FOMO > Disappointment

The exploratory exercise triggered by TINA Impression and a sense of FOMO led MSMEs nowhere. They used emails on the cloud and personal storage drives on the cloud in the name of Cloud Computing. Following are the main reasons why MSMEs are unable to adopt enterprise cloud computing.

Chatbots and Digital Support

It is the first time for MSME. Entrusting the digital assets of their business to the cloud is a serious matter for MSMEs. While exploring the possibility of adopting enterprise cloud computing, MSMEs had many genuine questions, apprehensions, and customization requirements. Most of my MSME connects shared that they encountered chatbots and were directed to FAQs without much relevance. It did not give them any confidence to take a step forward.

Multiple Service Providers

Given their concerns, they require reliable cloud storage for storing and collaborating on the files, cloud infrastructure to host their legacy applications, and dependable solutions for data backup. On top of this, they require effective solutions to prevent data leakage over the USB port, email attachment, and the Internet. They also require the solution to enforce enterprise IT policies on cloud users. Such requirements dictated contracting multiple cloud services, providing cloud storage, AD on the cloud, cloud-based data leakage prevention (DLP) solutions, virtual servers, virtual desktops, application virtualization solutions, remote access solutions, and cybersecurity solutions. It requires multiple cloud agent client software installed on users’ computers. It was too much to digest for an MSME owner who knows his business, not IT. This phenomenon pushed these explorers to the fences.

Complexity and Affordability

Contracting and integrating so many discrete cloud services without human touch is too complex for MSMEs. The absence of a competent IT resource makes it even more complex. Managing many cloud client agents and multiple admin panels of cloud service providers is a pain. The recurring per user per year cost for each service sums up to a prohibitively expensive proposition.

Need of the Hour

Adopting cloud computing is necessary for the future, and MSMEs are no exception. We cannot ignore that very few cloud services are designed to suit MSME needs. A single cloud service including storage, backup, policies, email vigilance, USB controls, Internet controls, remote application access, and a virtual server for hosting legacy applications is the one required by MSMEs.
